School founded with 45 pioneer students who began studies at St. Paul's Amukura, Teso South — placed in Form 1B, with "B" standing for Butula.
The pioneer class relocated to the current campus in Sikarila, Elukhari, Butula. Mr. Paul Joseph was appointed as the first Principal of the newly independent institution.

Butula Boys is a public national school. Form One admissions are conducted by the Ministry of Education on a competitive basis. Students qualify through outstanding KCPE performance.
Qualify through outstanding performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations. Selection is merit-based and handled nationally.
